The Wests Panthers claimed the Fogs A Grade Premiership with a passionate 30 - 24 defeat of the Redcliffe Dolphins at Kawana on Saturday. The Panthers matched their larger more experienced opponents with a mixture of passion, aggressive defense and electric attack. In a see-sawing affair the Panthers took the lead through a try to Ben Demmel with 8 minutes left on the clock and a sideline conversion from Matt Church stretched the lead to 6. The Panthers then clinically closed out the match to claim the season's top prize.
The Dolphins opened the scoring early in the match through a try to ex NRL star Michael Roberts. The Panthers, however, struck back via Adam Breen who crossed for the first of his 3 try's in what was a memorable match for the Wests flyer. The game was easily the best quality match of the season with the Panthers splitting the Dolphins defense on multiple occasions in the first half only to be denied by good scrambling defense. On a windy day at the Sunshine Coast the skill of both Matt Church and Dolphins winger Jed Fuller to land 5 and 4 goals respectively was outstanding. In what was by far his most influential and polished performance of the season, Panthers fullback Matt Church was solid in defense and a handful in attack. It was one of his incisions that lead to arguably the best try of the match when he skillfully positioned half Andrew McCrohon for an un-chequered path under the sticks.
For the Panthers, Liufau Hala was an unstoppable one man wrecking ball and Danny Green was at his inspirational best. The victory also kept coach Craig Ingebrigsten's Grand Final average for the Panthers at 100%.
