The Western Districts Panthers opened their season in style on Saturday at McKell Oval running out 38-10 victors over the Aspley Devils. Punishing Panther defence from the start laid the foundation for the dominate win as the Panther backs revelled in the space created for them by the pack. Up front Captain Jon Lee and Adam Starr led the Panther pack as it savaged the Devils from the first whistle.

In the halves Bryan Brown was at his scheming best and new recruit Adam Kal showed plenty of skill in his FOGS Cup debut.

Out wide the Panthers backs racked up the score with centre Troy Robotham crossing for three sensational tries, wing Adam Breen picked up two as did Fullback Brad McKee, who also kicked five goals. McKee’s return for the club was extremely welcome after he was force out in round 3 last year with a broken leg. Coach David Simpson wasn’t giving to much away post match, but said he was very satisfied with the result.

 

 

In Colts a real arm wrestle saw Aspley manage to hold the young Panthers to only two points and win the match 12-2 mainly through their outstanding defence. The Panthers error rate was a cause of concern for coach Craig Ingebritsen

 

The Panthers head to Burleigh Heads next Saturday to take on the Bears.
